Topics include phase transformations, microstructural evolution, strengthening mechanisms, precipitates and non-metallic inclusions, and the influence of crystal defects on material behavior and performance.

Attention will be given to understanding how different processing conditions modify microstructure, including phase distribution, grain size, morphology, texture, and defect structure, and how these changes influence the resulting properties. Heat treatment, thermomechanical processing, and microstructure control will be discussed within the context of individual alloy systems. Modern processing approaches, including additive manufacturing, will also be introduced to illustrate how alternative processing routes can generate distinct microstructures and properties.

Industrial case studies will be used throughout the course to demonstrate practical applications of alloy design and processing principles. By integrating fundamental materials science with real-world examples, students will develop an understanding of how alloy chemistry and processing can be tailored to control microstructure, optimize properties, manage phase stability, and achieve desired performance for engineering applications.

MSE 201: Structure and Properties of Engineering Materials

(Fall 2024; Spring 2026)

Introduction to the fundamental physical principles governing the structure and constitution of metallic and nonmetallic materials and the relationships among these principles and the mechanical, physical, and chemical properties of engineering materials.
