From Chemical Engineering to Materials Science: Zoe’s Journey at NC State

Zoe Watts, a senior at NC State, was originally drawn to chemical engineering. However, her path took a delightful turn when a summer camp experience in 2020 sparked her interest in materials science and engineering (MSE). Despite the challenges of COVID-19, Zoe participated in an online MSE camp where she discovered her passion for the field: an experience that led her to pursue an MSE degree at NC State.

Zoe’s journey through MSE has been filled with memorable moments and accomplishments. In her first year, she met two of her closest friends, whom she fondly calls the “material girls,” during MSE 201. This class, taught by the charismatic Dr. Irving, solidified her love for the subject. The course, full of engaging stories and fun facts, was just the beginning of Zoe’s involvement in the department.

Beyond academics, Zoe has actively participated in the MSE community, from participating in the MSE open house to performing nitrogen demos with racquetballs, tennis balls, and balloons. Her favorite aspect of the department is the strong sense of community: something that has made her college experience all the more rewarding. “It’s nice to feel like I can talk to anyone in the class if I need help,” she says, reflecting on the tight-knit group of students and professors. “We get to know our professors which makes it so much easier to ask for help or to get fun opportunities,” she continues.

In addition to her studies, Zoe’s time at NC State has been marked by her commitment to research. She has worked on a project with Dr. Tracy involving shape memory polymers and gold nanorods since her sophomore year. The project has been a long process, but Zoe is now on the verge of publishing her work, a proud milestone in her academic career. “It’s really exciting to see the end so close and to have something actually published with me listed as the first author!” Zoe shares, excited by the progress she has made.

After graduating, Zoe plans to continue her studies by pursuing a Master’s degree in MSE at NC State. She hopes to enter a career directly related to materials science, aiming to make a meaningful impact in the field.

Outside of her studies, Zoe has been involved with the Women in Science and Engineering (WISE) Village, where she worked as a mentor. One of her favorite memories from this experience is organizing a gingerbread haunted house event and participating in a bouncy house obstacle course during West Fest. The friendships and bonds she formed through WISE have remained a cherished part of her time at NC State.

Zoe’s story is a testament to the power of curiosity, community, and resilience. Her journey from a chemical engineering hopeful to a passionate materials science student shows that sometimes, the best paths are the ones we don’t expect.
