Luminescent Photonic Materials, Metamaterials and Devices

Qing Gu

Abstract

Functional photonic materials and metamaterials are the enablers of many photonic devices with novel functionality and high performance. Utilizing optical gain and loss in emerging materials and material composites, I will introduce gain-assisted luminescent hyperbolic metamaterials, and light emitters based on metal-halide perovskites and III-V materials, for applications in photonic integrated circuits. I will further discuss emerging physics and applications enabled by these material systems, including all-dielectric hyperbolic metamaterials and topological photonic states for robust data transportation.

Biography

Qing Gu is an Associate Professor at NC State with a joint appointment between ECE and Physics, and a member of the Carbon Electronics Cluster. She received her B.S. degree from the University of British Columbia, Canada in 2008, and her Ph.D. degree from the University of California, San Diego in 2014, both in Electrical Engineering. Before joining NC State, she was an Assistant Professor at the University of Texas at Dallas from 2016 to 2021. Her research activities include the experimental realization of quantum-inspired nanophotonic semiconductor light sources using emerging materials or novel cavity configurations, active and topological hyperbolic metamaterials, and perovskite optoelectronics. She is the author of the book “Semiconductor Nanolasers” by Cambridge University Press, published in 2017. She is a recipient of the ARO Young Investigator Award and NSF CAREER award.
