Student Life and Community
Graduate school in MSE goes beyond the research lab. From peer mentorship to local outings in Raleigh, our active student body keeps our department connected.
Peer Mentorship Program
- First-Year Mentee Pairing: Starting grad school can be a transition. First-year MSE students can be paired with an experienced peer mentor to offer advice, guidance, and answer questions as you settle into the department.
- Involvement: Watch for the Peer Mentee Interest Form sent out during the first week of fall classes to get matched!
Student Organizations and Skill Building
Get involved, lead a team, or build cross-disciplinary research connections through our student organizations and outreach programs:
- MSE Graduate Student Association (GSA)
- What it is: The primary student-led governing and social body for all MSE grad students.
- What they do: Hosts social outings, seasonal celebrations, coffee hours, and advocates for graduate student needs to the university-wide GSA.
- Leadership & Elections: Annual elections take place every May for key executive positions (President, Vice President, Treasurer, and Organizing Committee Members). Watch for nomination forms each spring to run or nominate a peer!
- Graduate Student Ambassadors
- Represent NC State MSE to prospective students, host department tours during recruitment weekends, and help welcome incoming cohorts.
- Electrochemistry Club (ECS Student Chapter)
- A community for students focused on energy storage, battery chemistry, electroanalytical methods, and corrosion research. Offers technical workshops and guest speakers.
- SciBridge Project
- A hands-on international collaboration bridging science research and education between US and African universities. A great opportunity to develop science communication and leadership skills.
